White "LAVA" — Glaze Powder
A highly decorative & sculptural glaze that creates a rich, volcanic texture in the firing.
Designed for high-fired stoneware and porcelain, this glaze develops a dynamic, cratered surface — alive with movement and depth.
This is our all-time favourite lava recipe used on a daily basis for 13 years in our studio practice.
2.image shows this glaze layered with our SNOW white matte/glossy glaze — a combination we return to again and again in the studio.
3. image shows on darker stoneware, the colour shifts toward a warm cappuccino beige, adding depth and softness to the overall effect.
4.image pictured in combination with our “Bright Turquoise Matte” glaze. This glaze responds beautifully to layering.
Firing Range
1240–1280°C (Cone 7–9, ≈ 2265–2336°F)
For the look seen in my work, I recommend firing to 1260°C (Cone 8, ≈ 2300°F).
At around 1260°C (≈2300°F), the surface becomes beautifully balanced: the bubbles soften and melt just enough, creating a smooth, almost silky texture without sharpness.
At the lower range (1230–1250°C / ≈2250–2280°F), the result is more dry and textured.
Fired beyond 1270°C (≈2320°F), the glaze becomes more fluid — the bubbles melt over further, transitioning into a smoother, beige-toned surface with less pronounced texture.

Food Safety Note
This glaze is lead- and cadmium-free, however the highly textured surface is not recommended for functional food-contact areas unless used as a decorative edge, as seen in my pottery.
Sold in Powder Form Only
Mixing Guidelines
Important:
You must mix the entire dry bag at once.
Because the glaze is blended by hand, the ingredients are not uniform in small scoops. Mixing only part of the bag will produce uneven results.
While most glazes are mixed at a 1:1 water-to-powder ratio, for a thicker consistency and more pronounced texture we recommend using less water — approximately 0.7:1.
Application
Apply a thick layer for the characteristic sculptural, cratered texture.
Suitable methods:
• dipping
• pouring
• spraying
• brushing
Expected Effects
This lava glaze will create a volcanic surface on your piece.
We recommend experimenting with:
• thickness of application
• number of coats
• firing cycles & temperatures
Always protect your kiln shelves well.
As with all specialty glazes, testing is essential — results vary with application, temperature, clay body, and firing schedule.
Important note on use & originality
This glaze is sold as a material for independent artistic use.
Purchase of this glaze does not grant permission to replicate or closely imitate my original vessel forms, rim cut-outs, proportions, or distinctive design language.
My shapes and compositional use of lava glaze are a core part of my artistic identity and remain protected as original work. Buyers are expected to apply this glaze within their own clearly distinct forms and designs.
Thank you for respecting originality, integrity, and ethical practice within the ceramics community.
