Liquid Quartz™ at Laima Ceramics

What it is — in simple terms

Liquid Quartz™ (LQ) is a food-safe, invisible sealer designed for unglazed ceramic surfaces.

It doesn’t sit on top like a varnish.
It moves into the clay — bonding with the porous structure — and leaves behind a breathable, durable, protective layer made from silicon dioxide (SiO₂), the same mineral family already present in clay and glazes.

The result:

  • Water beads and rolls off

  • Oils and pigments struggle to penetrate

  • The surface looks exactly the same — matte stays matte, raw stays raw

No shine. No plastic feel. No visual compromise.

Why we use it in our studio

At Laima Ceramics, many of our pieces are intentionally left partially unglazed — especially:

  • porcelain and stoneware bottoms for dinnerware

  • foot rings and bases

  • raku fired pieces

These areas are beautiful… but naturally porous and could stain over time.

LQ allows us to keep the honesty of the material
without asking the user to worry about stains, oils, or long-term wear.

How we apply it

1. Fully finished piece
Fully glaze fired piece— fully cooled

2. Proper cleaning
No dust, no residues (we sand, wash and let dry completely)

3. Application

  • spray and wipe onto unglazed areas

  • allow absorption

4. Cure time
→ 10min to be able to handle, 24 hours to fully settle (no firing required)

After this, the piece is ready for use.

What your clients should know

For those using the pieces:

  • Dishwasher safe

  • Microwave safe (up to high temperatures)

  • No visible coating

  • No change in texture

Over time:

  • Water may bead less (this is normal)

  • Protection remains — it’s within the clay, not on top

With gentle care it will last many years (5+ and beyond).

Why we trust it

Beyond performance, what matters to us:

  • No PFAS / “forever chemicals”

  • No petroleum-based ingredients

  • Water-based, skin-neutral

  • Based on silica — already native to ceramics

It aligns with how we want to work:
natural, honest, and long-lasting.

Liquid Quartz™ quietly solves a very old tension in ceramics:

the desire to keep surfaces raw and honest —
while still making them usable in everyday life.
