The Matcha Bowl Project

study of 55+ studio glazes, clay bodies, and surface textures.

For this ongoing project, we are creating a collection of hand-thrown matcha bowls as a way to explore and document the full range of our studio glazes.

Some glazes are tested across different high-fired clay bodies: porcelain, white stoneware, grey stoneware, and black stoneware. The same glaze can behave very differently depending on the clay underneath it, revealing changes in colour, depth, opacity, texture, and movement.

We are also carving different patterns and textures into the surface of the bowls. This allows us to see how each glaze settles, breaks and runs across the carved lines.

The result is both a collection of functional matcha bowls and an evolving glaze library in three dimensions.
