White Lichen Glaze Powder — Crawling / Lichen Texture Glaze
A striking white crawl glaze that breaks apart into soft lichen-like islands during drying and firing, creating a sculptural, organic surface. This glaze is perfect for potters who love expressive texture and intentional unpredictability.
Recommended Firing Range
1220–1280°C (≈ 2228–2336°F)
Cone 6–9 equivalent
Suitable for high-fired stoneware and porcelain.
Lead-free • Cadmium-free
Not recommended for food surfaces unless used over a fully glazed base layer that ensures complete coverage.
Why: This glaze crawls into raised “blobs” and leaves bare clay patches, which can be difficult to clean.
However, when applied over another glaze (especially a dark one), it can create a beautiful, even, “leopard spot” surface that may be food-safe depending on the underlying glaze.
Sold in Powder Form Only
Mixing Guidelines
Start with 1:1 water-to-powder ratio.
Sieve thoroughly.
Add small amounts of extra water if needed to reach a brushable consistency.
IMPORTANT:
You must mix the entire dry bag at once.
Because the glaze is blended by hand, the ingredients will not be evenly distributed if only part of the bag is mixed.
Yield Reference:
500 g (≈ 1.1 lb) creates approx. 800 ml (≈ 27 fl oz) of liquid glaze.
Application Notes
This glaze is thickness-sensitive and behaves differently from standard glazes.
For best control:
• Apply using a brush, so you can monitor thickness.
• The cracks begin forming as the glaze dries — this helps you visually assess thickness before firing.
• If applied too thick, sections may fall off before or during firing.
Tips for Use
• Excellent on dark clay bodies, where the contrast highlights the crawl pattern.
• Works well on vertical forms, but take extra care to avoid thicker, unstable areas that could detach.
• If you are new to crawl glazes, test on a shallow bowl first to understand the behaviour and protect your kiln shelves.
• Can be layered over a darker glaze for a stunning “white lichen on stone” or “leopard spot” effect.
Safety Warning
• Do not ingest.
• Wear gloves when mixing or applying.
• Avoid eye contact; rinse thoroughly with water if contact occurs.
• Prevent dust — never sweep dry material.
• Clean spills or dried glaze with a wet cloth only.
• Ensure good ventilation during firing.
