Grey Combo Glaze Set — Satin Black + Matte White (Layered Grey Effect)
Have you been searching for years for that perfect grey glaze — the one with subtle variation, the right undertones, and just enough depth? Me too.
After hundreds of test tiles, a moment of serendipity:
What if… white over black?
And there it was — the beautifully varied grey you see in the photos.
This set allows you to recreate that layered, tonal grey surface by applying two different glazes one after another. Each glaze is also available individually and works beautifully on its own.
Price per:
• 0.5 kg Satin Black Matte Glaze
and/or
• 0.5 kg Matte White Glaze
Lead-free • Cadmium-free
Suitable for high-fired stoneware
How to Achieve the Pictured Grey Effect
Apply Satin Black first, then — within 1–2 minutes — apply the Matte White glaze on top.
Thickness matters:
• Thicker white layer → light blue-grey tones
• Very thin white layer → darker grey, sometimes shading toward brown-grey
Because both glazes should be mixed slightly thinner than usual, they interact fluidly and create the soft transitions and tonal variation seen in the samples.
Some light pinholing may occur; once dry, gently smooth with your fingers if needed.
What You See in the Photos
Photos 1–5:
White glaze layered on top of black (applied with 1-minute interval).
Photos 6–7:
Matte White glaze on its own — shown on grey stoneware and speckled white stoneware.
Photo 8:
Satin Black glaze on its own on grey stoneware.
Recommended Firing Range
1240–1260°C (≈ 2264–2300°F)
Cone 7–8 equivalent
Works beautifully on high-fired stoneware.
Application Notes
We recommend applying with a brush for maximum variation and creative control.
• Apply the black glaze first
• Wait 1–2 minutes only
• Apply the white glaze on top
• Let dry fully before moving
• Surface variation depends on thickness, timing, and clay body
Sold in Powder Form Only
Mixing Guidelines
Start with 1:1 water-to-powder ratio
Sieve well
Adjust with small amounts of water until slightly thinner than your usual brushing consistency
IMPORTANT:
You must mix the entire bag at once.
The glazes are hand-blended, so partial mixing will result in uneven ingredient distribution.
Yield reference:
500 g (≈ 1.1 lb) dry glaze → approx. 800 ml (≈ 27 fl oz) liquid glaze.
Safety Warning
• Do not ingest
• Wear gloves when mixing and applying
• Keep away from eyes; rinse thoroughly if contact occurs
• Avoid glaze dust — never sweep dry powder
• Clean with a wet cloth only
• Ensure good ventilation during firing
